There are many opportunities for students to be successful in this class!

The following chart shows the ways grades are earned:

* Frequent graded independent reading progress checks will be made. These grades are temporary, until end of the quarter conference and     book share report grades take their place.

Throughout the School Year

Root Word Quizzes:  Students will need to study a few minutes each day, in order to be successful on these weekly "celebrations of our learning."  Students should be bringing home a Rooting Out Words booklet to study from.  The activity sheet each week can be found in this booklet and the quiz is consistently comprised of what is directly on these activity sheets.

Independent Reading Students will need to read for 20 minutes, 5 times each week.  Additionally, they will need to keep a record of time read, as well as write a response to a prompt for each of these times that they read.  Students will earn temporary progress check grades, until final grades are earned for independent reading at the end of each quarter.  Final grades will consist of a participation grade (rubric graded), as well as a book share report.

Grammar:  Students will review parts of speech, mechanics, punctuation/capitalization, and word choice.  A unit of direct teaching will be built into the school year, with reinforcement activities throughout the year.

Built Upon These Foundational Skills

Units

Beyond root word study and independent reading, students will complete several novel units.  Within these units, our focus will be on reading skills/strategies, comprehension, literary devices, as well as short and extended written responses.
